Kansas woman draws 15-year sentence in stabbing death of 88-year-old mother

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas woman who pleaded guilty to killing her 88-year-old mother has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Riley County police found June Smith suffering severe stab wounds last Aug. 31 at the Manhattan home she shared with her daughter, 45-year-old Diane Washam.

Washam pleaded guilty in May to second-degree murder. KMAN radio reports she tearfully apologized to her family in court Monday and said she doesn’t understand what happened at time of the killing.

Washam has been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and had not been taking her medication when she stabbed her mother.

District Judge Paul Miller said he believed the 15-year sentence was appropriate under the circumstances. He ordered corrections officials to do everything necessary to keep Washam on her medications and minimize her psychological problems.

Kansas Conference Seeks To Prevent Repeat Crimes

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) – Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback says getting non-profit and faith-based groups involved with criminal offenders can reduce the number returning to prison after being released.

KWCH-TV reports that Brownback spoke in Wichita on Monday at the “Out for Life” conference, which runs through Wednesday. The conference was organized by Prison Fellowship, a nationwide group that promotes ministry in prisons and church support for offenders after their release.

The Kansas Corrections Department says 43 percent of the offenders released from prisons will return for new crimes within three years.

Brownback told the conference that getting non-profit and faith-based groups engaged could reduce that figure.

Corrections Secretary Ray Roberts opened the conference by encouraging religious volunteers to increase their efforts to help offenders stay out of prison.
