More than 150 Union Pacific Railroad workers are replacing 11 miles of rail line between Russell and Hays.  The project will include a second segment of 11 miles between Russell and Ellsworth.  Track rails is being removed and replaced, and 63 road crossings will have a renewed surface. The infrastructure upgrade cost is 7 million dollars.

About 10 trains a day travel on the Kansas Pacific line between Kansas City and Denver.
