The Fort Hays State men’s golf team made a charge on Tuesday (Sept. 13) at the Pittsburg State Invitational in Pittsburg, Kan., at the Crestwood Country Club. Following a 310 on the first day, the Tigers shot 19 strokes better (291) in the final round to move up to sixth in the standings. The 291 tied for the second-lowest team score on Tuesday.

Unfortunately the Tigers were too many strokes back after the first day to vault any other teams than Missouri Western and Southwest Baptist. SBU was in sixth after the first day, while the Tigers were tied with MWSU. FHSU nearly caught Pittsburg State for fifth, which shot 304 on the second day.

Central Missouri won the event with a two-round total of 581 after scores of 290 and 291. First day leader Washburn fell to second, backing up a 288 with a 297 on day two. Lindenwood tied Washburn for second place shooting the lowest team score on Tuesday with 288 after a first day 297.

Hays freshman Trey Herman carded a 2-under par 70 on the second day to lead the Tigers. He tied for eighth overall with a total of 147. He shot seven strokes better on Tuesday.

Markus Hilger remained consistent, shooting one stroke better on the second day with a 74. His 149 total tied for 12th. Tom O’Keeffe shot three strokes better on Tuesday with a 74 and tied for 20th with a 151 total. Kevin Quinley, the lone NCAA regional qualifier for FHSU last year, erased an off day on Monday by shooting nine strokes better on Tuesday with a 73. His total of 155 tied for 36th.
