Hays High VS Liberal (LISTEN or WATCH)

The Hays High Indians are on the road Friday to take on the Liberal Redskins at the Burial Grounds.  Hays is 2-0 this season after wins over Chapman and Goddard; Liberal is 1-1 after a week one loss to Ulysses then beating Guymon, OK last week.

This will be the 35th meeting between the two schools with Liberal leading the all time series 26-8.  Hays has won the last two meetings and a win on Friday would mark the first time Hays has ever beaten Liberal three consecutive times.  The Hays v Liberal series is the seventh most played series in school history.

Liberal has a new coach in Cliff Abbott who played in the NFL with the New York Giants and coached previously as an assistant at his college alum Tulsa.  His sophomore son Britton is the starting quarterback and has thrown for 239 yards 3 touchdowns and 3 interceptions through the first two weeks.  His favorite target has been fellow sophomore Trenton Hammond whose 193 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns rank first in the Western Athletic Conference.  Abbott is also the leading rusher on the team followed by senior Justin McPhail who also leads the conference in tackles with 30 after two weeks.

Hays High leads the conference in team points, points allowed, rushing yards and total yards.  Hays has rushed for 812 yards, led by David Cardinal with 260 yards and Austin Unrein with 221.  Kaylor Meyers is the Indians leading tacker with 12 and Zach Binder has 11.  Cameron Rohleder is tied for the conference lead with two sacks and Mark Mathis is tied for the conference lead in tackles for loss with three.

Liberal has not had a winning season since 2005 and has lost eleven consecutive WAC games.

This is the first game between WAC opponents this season.  Also Friday Great Bend hosts Garden City.  Dodge City travels to Wichita North.

Game time is set for 7:00 and the Fort Hays Auto Sales Pregame Show can be heard with Dustin Armbruster and Kurt David at 6:30 on 96.9 KFIX.
