The Fort Hays State Tigers turned the ball over three times resulting in 14 Southwest Baptist points as the Bearcats knock off the Tigers 30-28 at Lewis Field Saturday night.
The Tigers raced to a 21-10 lead with just under six minutes to play in the second quarter, but Southwest Baptist used a 44 yard touchdown run from Justin Duhaney and a 38 yard touchdown catch from Nathan Mourik to grab a 24-21 halftime lead.
After a Southwest Baptist field goal to go up 27-21, the Tigers respond with an 11 play drive capped by a seven-yard Andre Smith touchdown run to go up 28-27.
Southwest Baptist came back with an 18-play 72-yard, 8:44 drive which ended in a 25 yard field goal to go up 30-28.
The Tigers drove to the Bearcat 25 in their final possession but Tyler Kimbrough missed wide left on a 42-yard field goal with 0:48 to play.
FHSU had 387 yards of offense, 225 on the ground and 162 throgh the air. Quarterback Blake McAhren completed 12-of-21 passes for 162 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Chase lead had four catches for 50 yards and a touchdown. Andre Smith rushed for 89 yards and a touchdown. Edward Smith added 88 yards on the ground. Linebacker Alex Whitehill added a career-high 20 tackles.
The loss drops the Tigers to 1-2. They travel to No. 2 Northwest Missouri State at 1pm next Saturday.
