FHSU Women’s Golf Wins Own Invite

The Fort Hays State women’s golf team improved on their first round scores and downed the field at the FHSU Invitational on Tuesday (Sept. 27) at Smoky Hill Country Club in Hays. The Tigers shot 333 on the tournament’s second day for a combined score of 657, which was seven shots better than Missouri Western who finished second. Northwest Missouri State finished third with a two-day total of 696, followed by Iowa Western CC at 737.

The Tigers were led by Kiley Johansen, who shot an 83 on the second day for a combined score of 165 which tied her with Steph Charteris of Northwest Missouri State. The two players then went to a playoff, with Charteris taking the victory on the first hole.

Three other players for FHSU finished in the top 10 to round out the team scoring. Samantha Hobson shot an 84 on Tuesday and finished fourth for the tournament at 169. Jordan Nixon was one shot behind and finished tied for fifth while Samantha Nielsen shot a 171 for the tournament and finished tied for seventh. Other finishers for Fort Hays State were Carmen Thompson, who shot a 93 on day two for a total of 183 and a tie for 14th place, and Arin Powers who shot a 111 for the second consecutive day.

This is the second tournament win of the fall for the Lady Tigers golf team, which has two remaining tournaments this fall. Their next action will be next Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 3-4) at the Central Oklahoma Classic in Oklahoma City, Okla.
