FHSU Battles But Falls Short Against No. 8 Pittsburg State

The Pittsburg State Gorillas score 21 unanswered third quarter points and knock off the Fort Hays State Tigers 38-17 in front of 4,704 on a rainy Saturday homecoming night at Lewis Field.

After Pitt State scored on their first possession, the Tigers tied the game on a 6-yard Andre Smith touchdown run. Pitt answered with a 12-play 64-yard, 6:27 scoring drive to go up 14-7 early in the second quarter. Each team exchanged field goals to make it 17-10 Pitt at the half. The Gorillas had a chance to go up more but WR Andrew Castaneda had the ball knocked away near the goal line by Sherod Murdock for a touchdack.

Anthony Sheppard, making his first start of the season at quarterback, capped a 10-play, 67-yard with a 7-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 17 with 10:10 to play in the third quarter.

Pitt scored on their next drive then took advantage of two Tigers turnovers for the final margin late in the third.

Pitt ended with 502 yards of offense on 88 plays compared to 172 yards on 44 plays for the Tigers. Sheppard completed just 7-of-17 passes for 96 yards with one interception. Andre Smith led the Tigers with 35 rushing yards and 48 yards receiving.

Pitt State moves to 6-0 on the season. The Tigers fall to 2-4 and 2-3 in the MIAA.
