
The Fort Hays State women’s golf team closed out the fall on a high note, winning the Park University Invitational in Parkville, Mo., on Tuesday (Oct. 11). The Tigers sat in second place after the first round, three strokes back of Grand View University, but roared past GVU on Tuesday for a 12-stroke win. The tournament was at The Deuce at the National Golf Course, a par-70 layout.
Samantha Nielsen led the tournament after the first day with her lowest round of the year, a 74. She slipped to a second place finish, but still shot in the 70’s with a 79 on day two. Ana Laura Gomez of Bellevue University jumped Nielsen for the individual title, shooting 73 on the second day. She was just two strokes back of Nielsen entering the second day after a first round 75.
The Tigers had two more top 10 finishers, including Jordan Nixon, who tied for seventh and Samantha Hobson, who tied for ninth. Nixon backed up a first-round 82 with an 83, shooting 165 for the tournament, and Hobson improved three strokes on the second day with an 82, shooting a total of 167 for the tournament.
Kiley Johansen remained steady with two rounds of 85. She tied for 12th. Carmen Thompson figured into the scoring for FHSU on the second day with an 84, following a first day 91. She tied for 19th.
Fort Hays State won three of the five tournaments it played in during the fall season. The team resumes action in the spring, which will include the MIAA Championships in April. The Tigers defeated both MIAA opponents competing in the Park Invitational, which included Missouri Western (3rd) and Northwest Missouri State (6th).
