With district play beginning for classes 6-3A this week the Country Bull Y102 Area Game of the Week will feature a class 3A District 14 matchup between the Smith Center Redmen and the Beloit Trojans.
Beloit is 5-1 on the season, with their only loss coming week one to Concordia. After losing to Conway Springs in the Sub-State Championship game last season, the Trojans returned 9 starters. One of the five starters returning on offense was Sophomore quarterback Payton Vetter. Vetter threw and rushed for over 500 yards in his Freshman season. Up front the Trojans return Jacob English and Bryce Black, both earned NCAA honors last season.
Beloit earned a very emotional win last week against Southeast of Saline, 22-12. The Trojans lost their leading rusher, Jaden Adams with an unknown injury. Adams was injured during the game and life-flighted to a Wichita hospital where he remains in serious condition.
Beloit’s opponent tonight is the Smith Center Redmen. The Redmen are 4-1 after a bye week last week. Smith Center’s loss was two weeks ago against Plainville. The bye week allowed the Redmen to heal up a little bit as they head into the final three regular season games. Smith Center finished 8-3 a year ago and won the district. This season they return 12 starters, 6 on both offense and defense. Along with center Kale Terrill, guards Josh McDowell and Grady Brooks the Redmen return quarterback Alex Hobelmann and leading rusher Truitt Kuhlmann. Kuhlmann already has 1,087 yards on the ground, which leads all 11-man rushers in Kansas.
Last season Smith Center out gained Beloit 436-369 and forced two turnovers on their way to a 35-30 win. Smith Center finished 3-0 in district and Beloit was 2-1.
The district rematch between the Smith Center Redmen and the Beloit Redmen kicksoff at 7:00 from Smith Center, coverage begins at 6:30 with Fort Hays State University Office of Admissions Pre-game Show on the Country Bull Y102 and online at Hayspost.com.
