After allowing an early Nebraska-Omaha goal, Fort Hays State men’s soccer scored the next three, winning 3-1 over the Division I opponent on Friday (Oct. 14) on the road in Omaha, Neb. The game was a battle of first year programs as the Mavericks also added soccer this season.

The win was the first over a Division I opponent in the Tigers first game ever against that level. With the win the Tigers upped their record to 8-2-1 on the season and increased their unbeaten streak to eight games, including four straight wins.

The Tigers’ only senio Travis Patzner scored FHSU’s first goal and his first of the season to tie the game at 1-1 at 13:06. The Patzner goal came from 10 yards away in the center of the box.

The scoring ceased until 53:45 when Tigers leading scoring Ricardo Yeverino, who was tied for 13th in Division II before today’s game, buried a shot to the low left corner of the goal, giving the Tigers a 2-1 advantage and Yeverino goal No. 11 on the season. Diego Cabral’s pass set up the goal.

The Tigers were not done offensive. Tomas Mares continued his hot play, scoring at 71:52 to increase the FHSU lead to 3-1. The goal was Mares fourth in the last three games. Cabral notched his second assist of the game on the goal, bringing his season total to eight, a team high.

The host Mavericks got on the scoreboard early, tallying their lone goal at 5:41 on a shot by Vance Rookwood from 18 yards out.

The Tigers return home for a three-game homestand. In the first of the three home games, FHSU welcomes Oklahoma Wesleyan on Tuesday (Oct. 18) to the FHSU Soccer Stadium for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
