Hays High rally in 4th, defeat Salina South 28-24

Hays High is heading the state playoffs for the first time since 1995.

The Indians were trying to play catch up to Salina South initially, and when the Cougars were looking to go up 14-0 in the 1st, they coughed up the ball in the end zone and Hays High fell on the ball for the touch back. Hays High hung tight in the first half, and went into half time down 10-7.

By mid-4th quarter, the Indians were down 24-14. But the special teams lived up to their name, and David Cardinal returned a kick 90 yards for a touchdown. The next play, the Indians got the onside kick to bounce their way, and regained possession of the ball. 8 plays and 4 minutes later, Cardinal punched in another touchdown, giving the Indians their first lead of the game at 28-24.

But the Cougars, with ample time to make a drive, made their way to the Indians 5 yard line. The Indians defense remained stout, and forced a turnover on downs with 1 second left. Then, a kneel, and a win.

Salina South racked up 481 total yards. Hays High had 343 total yards.

HHS RB David Cardinal had 181 yards on 23 carries, and 1 rushing TD. (plus the massive special teams return)
