After picking up a 52-21 victory over Sacred Heart last week, and their first playoff win since 1992, the Plainville prep football team will travel to Johnson City Friday to face Stanton County in the second round of the Class 2-1A State Playoffs.

Plainville (9-1) raced out to an early lead last Friday in Salina against the Knights. The Cardinals led 22-0 before the game clock even rolled off the first four minutes of the first quarter.

Junior Trevor Axelson had a huge effort in the opening round win. Axelson finished with 13 carries for 185 yards and two touchdowns. Senior Kyle Becker had one of his most efficient games of the year completing 9-for-10 passing for 100 yards and two scores both going to fellow senior Andrew Casey.

Even though junior Harrison Gilliland got hurt in the first half, junior Karson Zeltwanger came on in relief and picked up eight carries for 42 yards and a touchdown.

Stanton County squeezed by Ellis last Friday in the first round 35-34. The Trojans (9-1) scored the game-tying touchdown with just 16 seconds left in the game and would make the extra point for the win.

Stanton County’s only loss of the season came back in week five of the regular season to undefeated Meade in a 34-16 ballgame. The team from Johnson City has the third best scoring offense in Class 2-1A averaging 47 points per game.

The Trojans quarterback, junior Quinn Kendrick, hasn’t thrown the ball much on the season but did air it out more against Ellis a week ago. On the season, Kendrick is 28-for-45 passing for 412 yards and six touchdowns. He has rushed for over 700 yards.

The main threat out of the backfield for Stanton County is Marques Logan. The junior has piled up 1,034 rushing yards and 27 touchdowns.

If Plainville can win they will definitely be hosting a Sub-State game next Friday in Plainville against either LaCrosse or Meade.
