Strong Second Half Lifts Missouri Western Past FHSU

Fort Hays State’s Andre Smith raced 77 yards on the first play of the game and scored one play later to grab the 7-0 lead, but Missouri Western scores the games final 34 points and defeats the Fort Hays State Tigers 55-17 at Lewis Field.

The Tigers pulled within four on a Tyler Kimbrough 27 yard field goal after Alex Whitehill returned an interception to the nine yard line, but Western answered with a nine-play scoring drive to push their lead to 28-17 at halftime.

Western owned the second half, scoring a touchdown following a Keke Paul fumble on a punt return, then returned a Blake McAhren interceptoin 35 yards for a score.

Fort Hays, who had 144 yards of offense following their first two possessions, were held to just 153 the rest of the way. Andre Smith rushed for 135 yards and two touchdowns. Anthony Sheppard completed 7-of-11 passes for 95 yards but missed the entire second half with a concussion. Anthony Smith had five catches for 53 yards.

Tiger linebacker Alex Whitehill recorded a career-high 21 tackles to set the FHSU single-season tackle record. Punter Ethan Kosjer ends as the Tigers single-season and career punt yardage leader.

FHSU ends the season 4-7 and 3-8 in the MIAA.
