The Fort Hays State men’s basketball team overcame a sluggish start to knock off Nebraska-Kearney 65-51 in the season opener for both Sunday afternoon at the Health and Sports Center in Kearney, Neb.

The Tigers fell behind early by six before using a 9-0 run to take the lead midway through the first half and would lead by two at the half.

After UNK scored five straight to tie the game at 38, the Tigers scored nine unanswered to take the lead for good. Kendrick Morse capped the run with a steal and layup. He would add a 3-point basket to push the lead to 11.

Markus Yarbrough led two Tigers in double-figures with 11 points. Karron McKenzie added 10 before fouling out. Matt Simmons tied a career-high with 16 rebounds.

Fort Hays State shot 47-percent for the game and hit 4-of-10 from 3-point range, but just 1-for-5 in the second half. They also out-rebounded the Lopers.

FHSU returns home Tuesday to host Bethany College at 7pm at Gross Colsieum.
