(AP) – A state senator from Sedgwick County is proposing Kansas lawmakers roll back a 1-cent sales tax hike a year before the three-year measure expires.

Republican Sen. Carolyn McGinn says the sales tax increase in 2010 has done what it was supposed to do – prevent bigger cuts to essential services and the business infrastructure.

With the economy rebounding sooner than predicted, the Senate Ways and Means Committee chairwoman wants the 1-cent hike to expire at the end of 2012, instead of the scheduled 2013.

New estimates last week showed Kansas will collect almost $200 million more than was budgeted for the current fiscal year. McGinn says a provision of the 2010 sales tax law that dedicates a portion of the tax to highway projects should remain in place.
