The number one seeds prevailed at the Mid-Continent League Tournament Championship games on Saturday night. In the girls game it was Smith Center earning a 68-36 win over Hill City and the Plainville boys downed Norton 64-46.
In the girl’s championship game the Hill City jumped out to a 2-0 lead but that would be their only lead of the game. Smith Center used an 8-0 run to take the lead in the first quarter and led 17-7 after the first quarter. The Lady Red led by as many as 14 to start the second quarter and led at halftime 35-19 and they would never get closer than 16 in the second half on their way to the 68-36 win.
Smith Center’s Sydney Benoit had a game-high 16 points, Trenna Cox finished with 13 and Tangie Hileman added 10 points. Hill City’s Kelsey Keith had a team-high 13.
Phillipsburg finished 3rd with a 67-42 win over Trego. Norton was 4th with a 45-43 win over Osborne. Ellis finished 8th with a 59-23 win over Plainville.
In the boys championship game Norton jumped out to a 2-0 lead and led 7-4 before Plainville went on an 11-0 to take a 15-7 lead and led after one quarter 17-10. Norton pulled within seven a couple of times in the second but trailed by 12, 36-24 at halftime. Norton was able to hang around in the third quarter and trailed by 15 after three. In the fourth quarter Norton cut the lead to 10 at 50-40 with a 6-0 run but then the Cardinals turned it on and put together a 12-0 run on their way to earning a 64-46 win.
Plainville’s Kyle Becker scored lay-ups on three straight four quarter plays, during that 12-0 run and scored a game high 19 points, Andrew Casey had 12 and Hadley Gillum and Jameson Klein added 10 points. Jordan Wahlmeier paced the Blue Jays with 16 points and Jacob Brooks added 10. Plainville earned their second straight MCL Tournament Championship.
Hill City finished 3rd with a 52-51 win over Ellis. Trego was fourth with a 75-57 win over Smith Center. Phillipsburg finished 7th with a 54-40 win over Stockton.
