The Lady Monarchs’ hopes of winning four straight Trojan Classics in Hillsboro came to an end Tuesday afternoon after a 57-43 loss to Wamego in the first round.
Thomas More Prep – Marian, who entered the tournament as the 5-seed, held a brief 5-4 lead in the first quarter but witnessed a 7-0 run by the Lady Red Raiders to close out the quarter. TMP (7-3) got within four points on a few occasions in the third quarter but the steady play by Wamego never let them get any closer.
The Lady Monarchs had to contend with the talented and tall Page sisters from Wamego (7-1). The 6’2″ sophomore Kaylee Page finished with 28 points and 10 rebounds. The 6’1″ freshman Lanie Page ended with 14 points and 8 rebounds. The sisters’ combined 42 points nearly outscored TMP’s team total of 43 points.
TMP, who saw their five-game winning streak come to an end, was led by senior Rachel Jacobs who went for 13 points, five rebounds, and seven steals in the loss. Both senior Jenna Lang and junior Heather Ruder finished with 12 points for the Lady Monarchs.
For the TMP seniors, this is their first loss at Hillsboro High School. The Lady Monarchs, the three-time defending champion of the Trojan Classic, fall to the consolation side of the bracket.
TMP will face Goodland on Friday at 3 PM. The #8 Cowgirls lost to #1 Hillsboro Tuesday evening. Our coverage gets started at 2:40 with the Fort Hays Auto Sales Pregame Show on 14 KAYS and Hayspost.com
