A 6-week-old Hays boy is in protective custody in the pediatric intensive care unit at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.  He was flown by air ambulance with a serious head injury early Friday morning.

Police officers were called to the hospital after the child arrived about 1 a.m,  and were told the infant has bleeding on both sides of the brain.

According to Lt. Steve Kenney, when the parents arrived at the hospital, they told police they did not know how their child was injured. He was in the care of a babysitter at the time, they said.

Both police in Hays and Wichita are investigating the incident as possible abuse.
