As part of the state’s commemoration of theKansassesquicentennial, which has been celebrated over the past year, Governor Sam Brownback this week announced the top 12 Notable Kansas Events.
The events include the beginning of the Santa Fe Trail, the Indian Removal Act of 1838, signing of the Kansas-Nebraska Act, development of the Santa Fe Railway and women’s rights included in the first state constitution.
Other memorable moments are the formation of the Kansas Agriculture Society, the cattle drives, prohibition, beginning of the aviation industry in 1925, the Dust Bowl of 1935, electricity reaching rural Kansas in 1938 and the Brown v. Board of Education ruling in 1954.
