Hays High Girls Win, Boys Lose Against Salina South

GIRLS: Hays 46, Salina South 44
The Hays High girls withstood an 11-1 Salina South run in the fourth quarter to pick up their sixth win in seven tries, holding off the Cougars 46-44 Tuesday night at the Hays High Gym.

Hays went from eight up to two down during the four and-a-half minute drought, but layups from Taylor Herman and Paige Lunsford gave them the lead back before South tied the game on two free throws. Lunsford then hit two free throws with :06 to play to give the Indians the lead for good.

South’s final shot bounced twice on the rim and fell out.

Hays hit 16 of their 19 free throw attempts and was led by Lunsford who scored 14 points with four more players adding six or more points each as the Indians improve to 9-4.

BOYS: Salina South 53, Hays Hays trailed by 11 late in the third quarter, but hit three consecutive 3-pointers pulled them within four with 1:41 to play. They would go scoreless the rest of the way, giving up a 7-0 run to close out the game.

South shot 59-percent from the field while the Indians hit just 33-percent. Jordan Windholz scored a career-high 13 in the loss as the Indians fall to 4-9.
