The Fort Hays State Tigers were held scoreless over the final 6:11 of regulation after going up ten and fall to No. 16 Missouri Southern 80-73 in two overtimes Saturday afternoon in Joplin. It’s the second straight game in which the Lions erase a double-figure second half deficit to win in overtime.
The Tigers led by 11 with 8:18 to play but would score only two more points the rest of regulation and were held to just two in the first overtime before Lance Russell knocked in a corner 3-pointer with :10 to play to force the second OT.
MSSU hit 12-of-14 free throws in the two overtime periods to keep the Tigers at bay.
Fort Hays held the Lions, who lead the MIAA and are ninth in Division II in field goal percentage, to just 39-percent for the game.
Kendrick Morse led four Tigers in double-figures with 19 points. Karron McKenzie added 17 points and 12 rebounds. Matt Simmons scored 12 and grabbed 13 rebounds and blocked two shots, playing 49 of the games 50 minutes.
The loss is the second straight for the Tigers who fall to 16-8 and 10-8 in the MIAA. The Lions improve to 22-5 and 14-5 in the MIAA with their third straight overtime win at home.
