Hays High sophomore Preston Weigel placed only one spot better at the 2012 5A state wrestling championship than a year ago. But that one spot was enough to give the 170 pounder a state championship. Weigel lost just once this season finishing the season at 39-1. Weigel was tested just once in the tournament. Weigel one by fall in the first round in just 1:35 the won by a 15-0 technical fall in the quarterfinals. After a 6-0 decision over Johnny Perz of St. Thomas Aquinas, Weigel won by a 16-0 technical fall in the championship.
Cash Drylie finished second at 220 pounds. Drylie finishes his season at 38-3 with two of his losses coming to the 220 champion Luke Bean of Kapaun Mt. Carmel. The senior won by fall in just :58 in the first round, by 7-0 decision in the quarters and then moved to the championship with a 1-0 decision.
Kyler Meyers finished sixth at 160 pounds after reaching the semi-finals on Friday. Meyers finishes his junior campaign at 32-14.
Senior Derek Stiles finished in fifth place at the 126 pound weight class. He to reached the semi-finals on Friday. Stiles finishes his season at 35-10.
Freshman Ethan Deterding also took sixth at 152 pounds. Deterding finishes the season at 31-16. After losing his second round match, Deterding Ethan had to wrestle four backside matches.
As a team the Indians placed ninth with 82.5 points. Arkansas City, Newton, and Goddard took the top three team spots. Arkansas City won the team title without an individual state champion.
