The Hays High baseball team split their two games at the Maize South Triangular Monday, dropping their opener to Maize South 4-2 then coming back to defeat Augusta 7-4. The Indians are now 5-1 on the season.
Game 1: Maize South 4, Hays 2
The Mavericks score one in the second and two in the fourth to break a 1-1 tie. Josh Heifner takes the loss for Hays, allowing the four runs on eight hits over six innings.
Each team scored in the first. Hays got their run on a throwing error by the Mavericks third baseman.
Maize South would add a run in the second and two in the fourth to go up 4-1.
The Indians would get one in the sixth on a double from Hayden Hutchison .
Game 2: Hays 7, Augusta 4
Trevor Hennigson had three hits and Zach Legleiter drove in three runs. Tyler Wooldridge pitched 5 innings allowing four unearned runs on seven hits for the win.
The Indians took a 1-0 lead in the second on a Legleiter sac fly to center field. They jumped ahead 4-0, scoring three in the fourth on a Henningson RBI single and a Legleiter RBI double. Taylor Renz drove in the final run of the inning on a groundout to shortstop.
The Indians went up 6-1, scoring two more in the fifth on an Austin Unrein RBI double and Hayden Hutchison run scoring single.
Augusta plated three in the bottom of the inning to cut the gap to 6-4 but Hays responded with a run in the seventh on a bases-loaded walk by Legleiter.
