Katelyn SchumacherThe Hays High softball team split a pair of Western Athletic games in Great Bend on Thursday. Game number one turned into a pitchers duel with a pair of freshmen on the mound. Hays High’s Hannah Hearld and Great Bend’s Hunter Middleton. Each team scored just one run heading into the 11th inning when the Indians took a 2-1 lead on a Makenzie Flaska RBI squeeze bunt single to score Paige Lundsford. Then Middleton in Great Bend’s half of the 11th Middleton double home two giving Great Bend the 3-2 win. Hannah Hearld recorded her first loss of the season and it was also the first loss for Hays High this season. In game two Paige Lundsford homered in the first inning giving the Indians the lead. Hays High lead the entire way and picked up the 6-4 win. Makenzie Flaska picked up her first win of the season on the mound. Hannah Hearld was 4-4 with a double and Makenzie Flaska was 2-4 two doubles and 3 RBIs. The Indians are now 11-1 overall and 3-1 in the Western Athletic Conference and they will take on Larned next Thursday.
