According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Santos Carrera-Morales, who was serving prison time for two murders in Sedgwick County, was arrested in Russell, Kansas around 11:38 pm Thursday.

The police chief in the western Kansas town of Russell says a convicted murderer hitched a ride to a convenience store in the town, where he was arrested after escaping from a county jail.

Police Chief Jon Quinday told The Associated Press on Friday that escaped inmate Santos Carrera-Morales was taken into custody late Thursday by two police officers without incident at a store off of Interstate 70.

Quinday said Carrera-Morales was north of Russell along Kansas 18 when he got his ride.

Eric James, the fourth and final escaped inmate is still at large.

UPDATE Thursday 7:40PM: According to the Kansas Department of Corrections at approximately 5:30 PM, Drew Edward Wade, who escaped from the Ottawa County jail Wednesday morning, was apprehended in North Platte, Nebraska.  Drew E. Wade, 21, was in the stolen Chevy Venture van.

Wade told North Platte police that he had called his father, and that his father persuaded him to turn himself in.

“He walked into the local Walmart,” said police Sgt. Gary Hovey. “He approached the manager and asked him to call the police.”

Authorities said it was not clear whether James and Carrera-Morales were traveling together. Wade reportedly told North Platte police, “They all went in separate directions after they got out.”
