RFTW Thunders Through Hays

They call it “Rolling Thunder.”

Motorcyclists, hundreds of them, riding from Los Angeles to Washington, D-C.  More bikers join the procession they head east, finally stopping at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall on Memorial Day.

“Run For The Wall” is a tribute to all American military veterans and POWs.

The Hays American Legion Riders Post 173 organized a flag-waving crowd of greeters Sunday afternoon across the I-70 Commerce Parkway overpass.

Supporters came from a wide area, including Bazine, Palco and Waldo.

Monte Nichols came from Houston to meet his dad, Doug Nichols of Palco.  They both stood proudly with their American flags as the bikers roared past.  Then Doug and Monte joined the group.

Doug, 69, is a Vietnam veteran.  This is his fifth RFTW.  Monte is riding his brother Bryan’s motorcycle.  Bryan is the Hays native killed in a U-S Army helicopter crash last August while serving in Afghanistan.

Bryan and his dad made the trip together in 2009, and was to have joined his dad and brother this year.
