Wheat harvest is going to be early this year in Kansas, about three weeks earlier than normal according to the Kansas Ag Statistics.
Test cutting is underway in Barber County, the typical starting point for the Kansas wheat harvest each year.
Ellis County Extension Agriculture Agent Stacy Campbell says our area won’t be far behind. He predicts there may be some test cutting Sunday in Ellis County in fields that have a more sandy soil.
Campbell made his prognostication during Monday night’s annual Ellis County Extension wheat plot tour north of Victoria. About 50 local farmers heard updates on various wheat varieties.
The tour was moved up to May 21 from the first week of June. With a mild winter and warm spring, the winter wheat crop is advancing more rapidly than normal.
