The city of Hays has been recognized by the state as a leader in water conservation since 1988 when it implemented its first ordinance regarding water use.
Annual outdoor watering restrictions go into effect Friday, June 1 and continues through September 30. No outside water use is permitted in Hays from 12-7p.m., when evaporation rates are highest.
The ban applies to city of Hays customers and those with private water wells within the city limits.
Permits are available from the city Finance Office for special circumstances, including watering of newly seeded lawns.
Violations of the outside watering restrictions, including water runoff onto sidewalks or streets, are subject to fines and tickets from the Hays Police Department.
