The Hays Eagles Senior American Legion opened their season with a pair of wins over Great Bend Tuesday night at Larks Park. The Eagles score two in the bottom of the seventh to win the opener 10-9. Hays scores four in the third to break a 2-all tie and take the second contest 7-2.
Game 1: Hays 10, Great Bend 9
The Eagles scored six in the third to grab a 6-0 lead but the Chiefs rally with four in the fifth and five in the sixth and led 9-6.
Hays pulled within a run, scoring two in the sixth on a Riley Kaus groundout and a wild pitch.
The Eagles tie the game in the seventh on a Dan Bittel single. Kaus drove in the game winner two batters later with a single.
Austin Unrein went 4-for-5 and picked up the win in relief, pitching the final 1 1/3 innings, striking out two and walking none.
Hays scored their six runs in the third on RBI doubles from Kaus and Trevor Henningson, RBI singles from Zack Legleiter and Clayton Basgall and a sac fly from Dan Bittel.
Game 2: Hays 7, Great Bend 2
The Eagles score four in the third to break a 2-2 tie. Josh Heifner goes the distance, allowing two runs on two hits over seven innings, striking out five and walking three.
Casey Sedbrook, Riley Kaus, Clayton Basgall and Jake Sedbrook all had RBI’s.
