Nationally one child is killed in a hot car every nine days. That statistic has lead the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to address an issue that KidsandCars.org founder Janette Fennell has been raising awareness about for years.

Fennell says a change in routine is a red flag for parents or care takers. One prevention tip for people with small children is to get in the habit of always opening the back door when you reach your destination.
