It wasn’t the heat that hurt the most during Saturday morning’s HaysMed Center for Health Improvement Triathlon. It was the 35-45mph southerly wind gusts competitors had to battle.
The triathletes started indoors with a 500-yard swim in the C-H-I pool, transitioning to a looping, 12-mile bicycle ride and then the third and final portion, a 3.1 mile run.
63-year-old Bob Sanderson, Hays, has been competing in triathlons for about six years. “The training is the hard part. The race is the fun part,” he says.
Sanderson placed third in the triathlon.
49-year-old Kurt David, Hays, was the overall individual winner.
David says he was a little disappointed with his 26:01 run time, but he’s pleased with his bike time of 33:10, in spite of the wind. “I thought I was going to be blown over when those cross-winds hit,” he laughs.
David earlier qualified to compete in the Iron Man 70.3 World Championships September 9th in Las Vegas.
