Drought Tour Heads West to Trego County

The governor’s drought tour moved to western Kansas Tuesday.

Gov. Sam Brownback, accompanied by representatives from the Kansas Water Office and the state Agriculture Department, viewed Cedar Bluff Reservoir in Trego County.  Park Manager Chris Smith and Regional Manager Troy Brown of the Kansas Department of Wildlife Parks and Tourism pointed out the lake’s declining water level.

The tour also stopped at the Larry Hixson farm just north of WaKeeney, where co-owner Darrin Brungardt showed a corn crop stunted by the drought and heat.

State and local officials also met with Graham County agribusiness leaders in Hill City’s Gutierrez Mexican Restaurant at noon and then toured the Hoxie Feedlot to hear about the drought’s effects on the cattle industry.

The visits are a part of the Governor’s drought tour that began last week with two stops in Saline County in Central Kansas, followed by a trip to Allen and Neosho Counties in Southeast Kansas.

‘Black Madam’ Charged In Buttocks Injection Death

A woman who calls herself the “Black Madam” is charged with murder in the death of a London tourist police say died from a buttocks-enhancing silicone injection at a Philadelphia airport hotel.

Philadelphia police say Padge Windslowe was arrested Monday night and charged with third-degree murder in last year’s death of 20-year-old Claudia Aderotimi.

Windslowe was first arrested in February as police say she prepared to host a so-called “pumping party” at a Philadelphia house. Authorities say one of her customers had serious lung problems as a result of an injection.

Authorities said they knew Windslowe injected Aderotimi but had been awaiting test results from the Food and Drug Administration before making a determination in Aderotimi’s death.

A phone message left for the attorney in Windslowe’s February arrest wasn’t immediately returned.

Taylor is leaving Ellis to become Chief of Police in Clarksdale, Arizona.

Plains Ranchers Sell Cattle As US Drought Spreads

Cattle are streaming into auctions across the country as ranchers sell animals amid a spreading drought that has shriveled pastures and driven up the price of feed corn.

Beef from those animals will start showing up in grocery stores in November and December, temporarily driving down meat prices. But prices are expected to rise sharply by January in the wake of dwindling supplies and smaller livestock herds.

The number of cattle has been dropping for years, but the pace picked up last year as Texas ranchers liquidated herds.

Experts say that while the drought in the Southern Plains last year was bad, the cattle industry nationally was able to absorb the impact. This year’s drought is much wider, so the market implications are larger and more industry players are impacted.

The budget hearing will be August 20th.

More Extreme Heat, Rain Possible Wednesday

A lee side trough of low pressure will strengthen across extreme eastern Colorado today.

As a result, southerly winds of 10 to 15 mph this morning will increase up to 20 to 30 mph through early this afternoon. The dry conditions and low relative humidity levels by this afternoon will lead to near critical fire weather conditions across much of western Kansas. Therefore, outdoor burning is discouraged. Kansas Officials Say New Law Improves Child Care

State officials say a law passed two years ago has dramatically improved child care in Kansas, and improved the state’s reputation for the quality of its small family child care operations.

The 2010 law is known as Lexie’s Law, after a 13-month-old girl who died after from injuries she suffered at a Johnson County day care in 2004.

Among other things, it requires training for day care providers. It also requires day cares that take in up to six children to be regularly inspected. In the past, those small day cares were inspected only in response to complaints.

The Wichita Eagle reports that five years ago, Kansas ranked 46th in the country for policies that govern child care centers. This year, a national organization rated Kansas third.
