Begel’s Complete Game Keeps Larks Alive at NBC

Larks starter Joey Begel retired 11 of the final 12 batters he faced, throwing a complete game 3-hitter as the Larks stay alive at the NBC World Series with a 3-2 win over the Wichita Prospects in a quick game that lasted just one hour and 24 minutes Wednesday morning.

After giving up a two-out RBI single in the second then an unearned run in the third, Begel allowed just two base runners over the final six innings. One of them was on an error and the other on a bunt single as he wins his fourth game of the summer and pitches his second complete game.

After loading the bases with no outs but failing to score in the second innings, the Larks tied the game in third on a Todd Reller’s two-out single to right scoring Austin Darby and Ryan Busboom.

They took the lead with a run in the third. Aaron Cornell reached on an infield single, moved to second on passed ball. A Zair Koeiman groundout advanced him to third. He then broke the 2-2 tie on Austin Darby’s groundout to first.

The Larks move to 1-1 in the tournament and will play the loser of Thursday’s game between the Dodge City A’s and the Newton Rebels. Game time will be determined sometime Thursday.
