Hays Eagles Win First Round at Mid-South Regional

The Hays Eagles used two six run innings in their 13-6 victory over Columbia, Tenn during the first round of the Mid-South Regional Tournament in New Orleans.  The start of the game was delayed by over four hours due to rain and thunderstorms, plus the venue of the tournament was changed as well.

Hays trailed 2-0 after the first inning on a RBI single and bases loaded walk given up by starter Austin Unrein.  Hays would first strike in the bottom of the second loading the bases with no outs and tying it on a Dan Bittel 2RBI single and then took a 4-2 lead on a Casey Sebrook two out-2 RBI double.  Hays would score six in the bottom of the second and lead 6-2 after two.

Each team scored a single run in the fourth making it 7-3.

Starter Austin Unrein gave way to first baseman Trevor Henningson in relief in the fifth inning were Henningson gave up three runs but then went on cruise control for the next four innings.

After Columbia made the score 7-6 in the fifth inning, Hays clung to the lead and then expanded on it in the bottom of the eight with their second six run inning.  The Indians used only two hits in scoring the eight runs, by being patient at the plate and at one point working three bases loaded walks in a row.

Hays moves to 46-8 on the season while Columbia drops to 32-16.

Start time of the second day has been moved back to noon on Friday, meaning Hays’ game will likely be pushed back from 7:00 to at least 9:00 p.m.  The Eagles will face Retif Oil which is based out of Jesuit High School in New Orleans, were the tournament is now being hosted.

There is a 60% chance of thunderstorms once again on Friday, so delays could once again happen on day two.

The game will also be heard on Mix 103 due to the Kansas City Chiefs preseason game.
