Demolition of the Opera House in downtown Hays will begin on Monday. The garage south of the building will be torn down first, and then work will begin to take down the crumbling building.

Planning Inspection and Enforcement Superintendent Jesse Rohr says there will be some traffic restrictions during the project. The 200 block of West 9th Street will be closed next to the project, and Fort Street will be one-lane.

Demolition and removal of debris is expected to take about two weeks.

The city and property owner agreed last month that the poor condition of the building made it a hazard and it needed to be demolished.
