City Debates Fireworks Regulations

For many years fireworks were not allowed in the City of Hays. Since that law changed, the fireworks regulations have been altered many times to try to appease both the pro fireworks and anti fireworks citizens. With that in mind, the city staff has recommended that fireworks again be banned.

However, the commissioners Thursday night said they’d rather set a date in late May to vote each year on allowing fireworks.

Commissioner Barbara Wasinger says they understand that people who sell fireworks will already have their inventory ordered, but that’s part of doing business.

Two fireworks sellers applauded the commission’s decision this year to ban them due to the drought, but also said there needs to be some consistency in the regulations from year to year.
