Bond Set for Bomb Suspect

The Wisconsin man accused of possessing a homemade bomb that closed several blocks of downtown Hays Friday remains in the Ellis County Jail on $20,000 bond.

A bond hearing was held Monday in Ellis County District Court for 22-year-old Steven Wright, who is being held on probable cause of Criminal Use of Explosives and Possession of Methamphetamine. County Attorney Tom Drees says he expects to file formal charges by Monday.

A Hays police officer discovered the explosive device after he stopped Wright for a traffic infraction around 1am Friday in the 100 block of West 10th Street. The Kansas Highway Patrol’s Hazardous Device Unit removed and dismantled the bomb.
