Emporia State scored touchdowns on their first two possessions then scored 21 unanswered  in the second half after Fort Hays State pulled within eight and beat the Tigers 41-18 Thursday night at Welch Stadium.

The Hornets racked up 534 yards of offense and overcame three turnovers in the win. Senior quarterback Tyler Eckenrode threw for a career-best 414 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another score.

The Tigers were held to just 303 yards. Anthony Sheppard started the game at quarterback and threw for 91 yards on 8-of-13 passing. Tarean Austin entered in the second series of the second half and engineered a touchdown drive. He finished with 92 yards passing, completing 8-of-18 and a touchdown. He also ran for a score late in the game.
