Vietnam Veterans Want to Display Helicopters in Hays

The Hays Vietnam Veterans Association has proposed placing a static helicopter display at the airport as a memorial to the veterans of that war.

The location under consideration is on the east side of the airport entrance. City Commissioner Henry Schwaller is in favor of the memorial, but has some concerns about the location. Schwaller says the display could be in the way if there is a need in the future to expand the airport or the parking.

Public Works Director I.D. Creech says the display could be moved relatively easily if necessary. Commissioner Ron Mellick says the airport property would be more secure than the airport park.

The commission will consider taking action on the request next week. The VVA is applying to the Department of Defense for the helicopters.
