Hays High and Garden City essentially played two separate games on Friday night at Buffalo Stadium in Garden City. In the first half defense prevailed as Hays scored the only seven points of the half. Those seven points came after Garden City has second and goal from the one yard line but fumbled, which was recovered by Adam Deterding. Hays used the turnover to start a 99 play drive that was finished off by a Emilio Mitchell six yard touchdown run. Garden City also had a touchdown called back after a holding penalty in the first half.
While defense dominated the first half, the second half was all offense. The teams combined to score on their first five drives to start the second half. Hays answered right back with a eight play sixty-four yard drive that ended with a Preston Wiegel one yard touchdown run. Hays though missed the extra point to lead 13-7. Garden City scored eleven plays later on a fourth down two yard touchdown pass from Greyson Tempel to Tanner Foley with just 1:47 remaining in the third to take a 14-13 lead. Hays led 21-14 into the fourth when Garden City tied it up on a Tempel seven yard run…Garden City converted on four third down conversions and a fourth down on the that drive.

Five plays later Alex Delton atoned for his fumble inside the three with a touchdown run from five yards out. Hays converted on a two point conversion for the 29-21 score with thirty-0ne seconds remaining. Garden City advanced the ball to mid-field but never got a shot at the endzone.
