TMP Loses 3rd Straight

A sweet start for the TMP Monarch turned sour quickly as TMP fell to Ellsworth Friday Night, 50-35.  TMP led 7-0 late in the first quarter before the Bearcats answered with 22 straight points.  The Monarchs pulled back to within 7 late in the first half but Ellsworth tacked on 14 late points and led 36-15 at halftime.

The second half didn’t start much better as Ellsworth marched down the field and scored making it a 43-15 game.  TMP fought back and pulled to within eight points late in the 3rd Quarter but would not find the endzone again.  Trevor Miley capped off a career night with his 4th touchdown run of the game with under a minute to play to seal the game.

TMP drops to 1-3 on the season and hits the road next Friday to take on LaCrosse.  Ellsworth improves to 3-1 with their 3rd straight win and will face Beloit next Friday.

Hays High Edges Out Garden City 29-21

Hays High and Garden City essentially played two separate games on Friday night at Buffalo Stadium in Garden City.  In the first half defense prevailed as Hays scored the only seven points of the half.  Those seven points came after Garden City has second and goal from the one yard line but fumbled, which was recovered by Adam Deterding.  Hays used the turnover to start a 99 play drive that was finished off by a Emilio Mitchell six yard touchdown run.  Garden City also had a touchdown called back after a holding penalty in the first half.

While defense dominated the first half, the second half was all offense.  The teams combined to score on their first five drives to start the second half.  Garden City tied the game on a seven play seventy-five yard drive with 9:26 remaining the third.  Hays answered right back with a eight play sixty-four yard drive that ended with a Preston Wiegel one yard touchdown run.  Hays though missed the extra point to lead 13-7.  Garden City scored eleven plays later on a fourth down two yard touchdown pass from Greyson Tempel to Tanner Foley with just 1:47 remaining in the third to take a 14-13 lead.  It take just three plays to regain the lead on a sixty-six yard touchdown pass from Alex Delton to Adam Deterding who ran through a pass interference call that was declined.  Hays led 21-14 into the fourth when Garden City tied it up on a Tempel seven yard run…Garden City converted on four third down conversions and a fourth down on the that drive.

Tied at 21, it looked like Hays was about to again take the lead when Alex Delton fumbled at the three yard line with 4:54 remaining in the game.  Garden City though went just five plays when quarterback Greyson Temple was hit as he threw and the ball fluttered right into the hands of Emilio Mitchell for his first career interception.

Five plays later Alex Delton atoned for his fumble inside the three with a touchdown run from five yards out.  Hays converted on a two point conversion for the 29-21 score with thirty-0ne seconds remaining.  Garden City advanced the ball to mid-field but never got a shot at the endzone.

Hays moves to 3-1 and 2-0 in conference play.  Garden City falls to 2-2 and 1-1 in the WAC.

Hays returns home for homecoming against Wichita South.  Garden City looks for their first win at new Buffalo Field in their third try, this time against the Liberal Redskins.

Attorney Sues Over Obama’s Ballot Listing

A California attorney has filed a lawsuit in Kansas challenging President Barack Obama’s listing on the state’s Nov. 6 election ballot.

Attorney Orly Taitz has promoted the discredited notion that Obama is not a U.S. citizen in other states. Her lawsuit in Shawnee County District Court also says she’s representing a registered Kansas voter named Roger Walters but doesn’t say where he lives.Taitz filed her lawsuit Thursday, and a hearing is scheduled for Oct. 3.

The defendants in the lawsuit are the State Objections Board and Secretary of State Kris Kobach, its chairman.

Earlier this week, the board closed a review of whether Obama should be listed on the ballot after the president’s birth-state of Hawaii authenticated information in an online copy of his birth certificate.

Woman Caught With Cocaine In Russell County Sentenced To Prison

A woman from Mexico has been sentenced to 46 months in federal prison after she was arrested in Russell County, Kan., with more than 12 pounds of cocaine, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said Friday.

Monica Carrillo, 28, Nogales, Mexico, pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent to distribute cocaine.

In her plea, she admitted that on Feb. 28, 2012, she was stopped by a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper in Russell County, Kan.

A search of the car turned up a hidden compartment containing 5.45 kilograms (more than 12 pounds) of cocaine.

She told investigators she was promised $1,000 to transport the drugs from California to Chicago.

International Student Services Office Seeks More For FHSU’s Friendship Family Programram

Meeting people from other parts of the world, learning about different cultures, teaching others about life in the United States and gaining new friends are all benefits of Fort Hays State University’s Friendship Family program.

“During the 2011-2012 year, we matched 30 families with 79 students while we were unable to find families for many more,” said Marnie Kohl of the International Student Services Office. “Once again, we have a record number of new students with over 155 international students. Because of this increase, we are looking for more families and individuals to get involved.”

Families in the program must be a family to one or more FHSU international students for at least one year and contact their student once a month to see how they are doing. Families should include students in some of their activities and answer questions about American life and culture. Participants must actively support and participate in the social activities planned for members and students.

Individuals, students, married couples and families are all encouraged to become Friendship Family program friends. Community members of all ages can participate.

Rewards of participating in the program include helping students living far from home adjust to life in a new country and meeting other community members with similar interests.

Responsibilities do not include housing, legal matters, serious health and emotional problems, immigration, and other governmental obligations.

“I would highly recommend getting involved with the program. We’ve had a great experience with our students and it was not a large time commitment,” said Dr. Tisa Mason, vice president for student affairs. “Sharing our customs and experiencing the students’ curiosity and joy deepened and enriched our appreciation for our family’s heritage.”

“The program will be far more beneficial for yourself rather than the students,” said Brad Botz, director of gift planning and corporate secretary for the FHSU Foundation. “They are great young adults willing to learn and participate in any activity you can provide. My wife and I enjoyed sharing the different holiday seasons with them.”

“Words cannot describe the expressions on their faces when we had them answer our front door on Halloween night,” said Botz. “Do yourself a favor and get involved.”

Mason, 785-628-4277, and Botz, 785-628-5888, can help with questions about their personal experience and involvement with the program.
Applications can be picked up at the Student Affairs office in Sheridan Hall, room 208, or from the website atwww.fhsu.edu/international/ffp

For more information, contact the Office of International Student Services at 785-628-4276 or visit www.fhsu.edu/international and click on the programs tab.

Sedgwick County Inmates Claim Sexual Assault Seeking $2 Million In Damages

Two jail inmates who claim they were sexually assaulted by a deputy are seeking $1 million each from Sedgwick County.

Sedgwick County recently received the claims for $2 million in damages. They’re a first step in possible lawsuits alleging civil rights violations and negligence.

Over the summer, the county received another $20 million in claims from two inmates alleging they were assaulted by the same deputy, David Kendall. The 22-year-old resigned in late June and is facing 12 criminal charges.

Eleven of the 12 charges accuse him of sex crimes against six inmates. Kendall is free on bond.

The Eagle obtained copies of the claims through an open records request. Sheriff Robert Hinshaw has said his department is cooperating with an FBI investigation.
