Betty Lou Longpine

Betty Lou Longpine, Hays KS passed Friday, September 28, 2012, at the age of 79. She was born July 24, 1933 in Dalhart, TX to Ervin & Hazel (Rollins) Barrow.

She spent her childhood in Dalhart and graduated from Dalhart High School in 1951. Her life in the workforce began in Dalhart where she was employed by the SW Public Services. It was there, that she met her lifelong soul mate Bill R. Longpine. Bill and Betty later married on January 3rd, 1954 and four years later made “Hays” their home. Betty always dreamed of owning her own business and in 1972, her dream became reality when she opened her very own Fashion Two Twenty cosmetic studio. She thrived in the business winning numerous awards, trips, and automobiles. She sold the business after 11 years and soon found her next calling in volunteering. She began managing, marketing, and buying items for the Hadley Hospital gift shop. She loved all aspects of volunteering especially that it gave her time to spend with family & friends as well as enjoy her lake house at Cedar Bluff Lake. Betty always was an entertainer! Whether it be at her own home in Hays or her lake house, you could always find her planning her next bridge party, a game of dominoes, backyard pool parties, or just family get togethers. She would do anything to get people together and just have a good time.

In September of 1987, her keen business sense was put back to work when she joined her daughter Tonya and opened Mam’Zelles Ladies Apparel. She had always loved making women feel and look beautiful, and was always ready for to visit with all the ladies who came into the store. Betty retired from Mam’Zelles in 1997 and found a new passion in a special organization, better known as, The Red Hat Ladies. She soon found herself as a Queen mum when she brought the club to Hays and starting her own chapter, the “Hays Hat-a-tudes.” For everyone that had the privilege to know Betty knew she was a fighter! She was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 1997, but that never held her back. She was still out and about in Hays whether it was playing bridge, making herself beautiful, or just to mingle with others. She handled her illness with grace and dignity down to the last second of her wonderful life.

Betty’s survivors include her husband Bill R. Longpine of the home; two sons, Curtis & his wife Renee of Hays; Randy and his wife Carrie of Antonino; and one daughter, Tonya Staab and her husband Brian of Hays; one sister, Marlene Key and her husband Bill of Dumas, TX; and sister-in-law, Yvonne Barrow of Dalhart, TX. Betty was also blessed with five grandchildren, Tyler Longpine, Brianne (Staab) Sultzer and husband Ryan, Ryan Longpine, Tasha (Staab) Lang and husband Kevin, and Kelsey Longpine, as well as 3 great grandchildren: Harper & Hudson Sultzer and Ashlen Lang.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Choice Barrow.

Due to Betty’s abundant love for the colors red and purple and her Red Hat Ladies always putting a smile on her face, the family asks that we shower her with red and purple and keep that smile alive.

Betty’s celebration of life service is at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, October 4, 2012, at Cline’s Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 22nd, Hays, Kansas 67601 with Rev. Delbert Stanton officiating. Wheat Harvest Numbers Revised Downward

A new government estimate reduces the size of this year’s winter wheat harvest in Kansas.

Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service reported Friday the state harvested 382.2 million bushels of winter wheat. The new number is about 1 percent lower than last month’s report. But it is up 38 percent compared with the drought-stricken harvest of last year.

Growers in Kansas this year hauled in the largest winter wheat crop since 2003.

The grain was cut from 9.1 million acres this year. That is 15 percent more wheat acres than the previous harvest. It would have been even higher had farmers been able to harvest all of the 9.5 million acres they had planted to wheat in the fall of 2011.

Yields were estimated at 42 bushels per acre.

Kansas Economy Continues To Show Growth

Kansas’ economy continues to grow with individual income, corporate income and financial institutions all beating monthly revenue receipt estimates and total revenue receipts are 8.6 percent higher than in September 2011.

In its recent 3 Quarter report, the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City noted that “The economic situation in Kansas improved during the summer of 2012.” The report noted that total payroll employment grew over the summer with the strongest job gains in an array of sectors including manufacturing, construction, professional and business services and education and health services.

September’s revenue receipts show the state has continued on that upward trend with monthly receipts beating estimates by $28.3 million, or 4.9 percent. That puts Kansas $16.2 million above estimates for the fiscal year.

The corporate income and financial institutions sectors both showed strong growth with corporate income surpassing estimates by $32.7 million, or 65 percent, while financial institutions were $3 million or 77 percent more than estimates.

“We are pleased to see growth in the Kansas economy continue this year,” said Revenue Secretary Nick Jordan. “We expect the growth in corporate income receipts to indicate future jobs growth in the private sector which will help the governor’s two goals of growing private sector jobs and increasing the net worth of Kansans.”

Individual income receipts were also $14 million higher than expected, beating estimates by 4.7 percent.

New State Record for Blue Catfish

PRATT—After the required 30-day waiting period, the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism (KDWPT) has officially recognized a 102.8-pound blue catfish as a new state record.

Rob Stanley, of Olathe, caught the fish, which bests the former state record blue by more than 8 pounds.

When Stanley hooked into a blue catfish while fishing the Missouri River on August 11, he was pretty sure it was bigger than most he’d caught.

After a 40-minute battle,  Stanley and his boat partner, Brad Kirkpatrick, weighed it on a digital scale. When it “bottomed-out” the 100-pound scale, Stanley and Kirkpatrick knew they had a special fish.

After calling KDWPT fisheries biologist Andy Jansen, Stanley kept the big cat in an aerated tank near the river. After weighing the fish on certified scales and species confirmation by Jansen, Stanley released the fish back to the Missouri River.

Stanley caught the new state record blue catfish at 5 a.m. using cut bait (Asian carp caught from the river). The fish was 56.75 inches long and had a girth of 39 inches.

Story by Randy Picking ~ Salina Post

A Salina Police Officer is in a Oklahoma City Hospital receiving treatment for a gunshot wound to the face while he and other officers were responding to a home where a car that was reported stolen late Thursday night was found.

Salina Police Chief Jim Hill released the following statement during a briefing with the media Friday morning:

At 2328 hours on September 27th, Dispatch advised that a 2004 Gold Cadillac was taken from 1114 N. 5th, and that the vehicle was either possibly involved in a civil matter or stolen. The suspect was identified as 19-year-old Marjion Gadson, and was reportedly armed with a handgun.

At 2332 hours, the reporting party advised that the Cadillac was behind 308 N. 13th.

Officers arrived at the house and were told the suspect was in the basement by individuals exiting the dwelling.

When all attempts to contact the suspect failed, five officers entered the house from the west side. The officers repeatedly announced their presence and identifed themselves. Gadson responded by firing multiple shots at them, striking one officer, a 10-year veteran of the department in the face. One officer returned fire as the other officers went to the fallen officer’s aid. They backed out of the residence and called for an ambulance and summoned the Special Response Team.

After repeated attempts throughout the night to talk with the suspect by various means were unsucessful, tear gas was deployed into the residence. The SRT entered the house and found Gadson dead in the basement.

Upon Request of the Salina Police Department the Kansas Bureau of Investigation will be conducting the investigation into the case.

The injured officer whose name has not yet been released, walked to the ambulance, then taken to Salina Regional Health Center, then transferred by EMS to a Wichita Hospital, before being sent to a hospital in Oklahoma City.

Kansas Child Molester Sentenced To Life In Prison

The former manager of an eastern Kansas mobile home park has been sentenced to life in prison for molesting four children from November 2009 to May of this year in his trailer.

Sixty-one-year-old Lawrence McDonagh II, of Tonganoxie, was sentenced Thursday in Leavenworth County District Court on multiple counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child.

McDonagh pleaded no contest in August. He was arrested in May after deputies served a search warrant at the Paradise Mobile Home Park and seized several items from his home.

Prosecutor Todd Thompson says McDonagh initially was charged with eavesdropping for secretly videotaping children, but the charges were amended after evidence led to the molestation charges.
