175 Years of John Deere

There were a few extra tractors at Carrico Implement in Hays Saturday, and they were not for sale.

In fact, these tractors are old,  and most are collectors items, brought in for Carrico’s third annual Old Iron Classic Antique Tractor Show.

John Dreiling of Hays, and his dad have been collecting and restoring tractors for30 years.  “We have about 32 tractors;  most are John Deere, a few Massey.  My dad was born in 1931, and walked behind horses.  My grandpa drove a John Deere D, ” says Dreiling.  “I just like to keep the heritage going.”

After getting some driving tips from her dad, Dreiling’s 7-year-old daughter Nicole won second-place in the “Slow-Poke” race atop the family’s John Deere 60.

The event was also a celebration of the John Deere company’s 175th anniversary.

SEN. MORAN STATEMENT ON ANNIVERSARY OF 9/11 ATTACKS

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) has released the following statement on the 11th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks:

“No one will ever forget that September morning 11 years ago when they heard the news: America is under attack. On that day, we suffered a horrific national tragedy, the images of which are forever imprinted into my mind and the minds of the American people.

“Rather than destroying our faith in the American ideals of liberty and freedom, September 11, 2001 united us in a way I had never seen before. Out of the devastation of that day rose many heroes. We saw the stark contrast between the terrorists who plotted to kill innocent Americans, and the firefighters, rescue crews and brave citizens who willingly risked or laid down their own lives to save people they had never met.

“Through service and selflessness, we can all exemplify the type of patriotism that was so wholeheartedly shown on September 11, 2001. If you’re not sure where to start, check with your local church or community center for ideas on how you can give back – and honor the nearly 3,000 innocent people who were killed that fateful day.”

County Searches for Road Improvement Funds

With increased traffic due to development along 230th Avenue north of the interstate and east along Feedlot Road, Ellis County is searching for funding mechanisms to pave those roads. County Administrator Greg Sund says they can apply for grants, but those won’t cover the total cost.

The county anticipates even greater truck traffic as the area develops, and the roads need to be widened and paved with asphalt that can handle heavy loads.

The commission agreed to have Sund and Public Works Administrator Mike Graf apply for any applicable funding.

Fees Slashed For Adoption of Some Kansas Horses Trained By Inmates

Some horses being trained by inmates at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility are now available for adoption at the lowest price allowed under Kansas law.

The Hutchinson News reports an expanded partnership between the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and the Mustang Heritage Foundation allows the BLM to offer some horses for $125 apiece.

Between 14 and 18 minimum security inmates participate in the training program at any given time. The correctional center has areas designed to hold 350 horses in multiple enclosures and pens, all built by inmates using donated materials.

The BLM has offered horses for adoption at the Hutchinson facility since 2001, typically for fees $600 to $1,000 apiece.

Several untrained horses at the facility also are available for adoption.
