UPDATE: Alligator Captured After Roaming In Kansas Town

A 4-foot alligator that caused some concern while wandering through a small southern Kansas town is in police custody.

Police in Caldwell caught the alligator Wednesday evening at a hardware store.

The animal was seen wandering on main street earlier in the day. Because it escaped from a home about a block from an elementary school, students at the school were kept inside for recess. No one was injured.

It was not immediately clear what would happen to the alligator now.

Caldwell is about 60 miles southwest of Wichita.

No Problem for FHSU Women’s Soccer in Home Opener

The Fort Hays State women’s soccer team scored in the first minute and never looked back as they win their home opener 6-0 win over McPherson College Wednesday night at the FHSU Soccer Complex.

Sade Humphrey put the Tigers on the board early. Kylie Watson added a goal 15 minutes later. The Tigers added four goals in the second half as they improve to 2-1 on the season.

Alexis Aiman scored two goals and added an assist, just missing a hat trick when one of her shots hit the post in the second half.

The Tiger defense allowed just one Bulldog shot and that came in the 73rd minute.

Fort Hays State is back at home Friday against Midland University at 6pm.

Theater Shooting Suspect Withdrew Application To Attend KU

The man suspected of opening fire in a Colorado movie theater had applied to the University of Kansas graduate school but withdrew his application before the school decided whether to admit him.

The university released James Eagan Holmes’ application on Wednesday in response to open records requests filed by The Associated Press and other news outlets.

Holmes applied to neuroscience programs at a half-dozen graduate schools and ended up at the University of Colorado, Denver. He withdrew at the end of his first year, about six weeks before the shootings.

Many parts of Holmes’ application to Kansas appear to be similar to his applications released by other schools.

The July 20 shootings killed 12 and wounded 58. Holmes is charged with murder and attempted murder. He hasn’t entered a plea.

Ribbon Cutting at Hays Middle School

“Believe.”

That’s the mantra of Hays Middle School, which is now the only public middle school in USD 489 following the closure of Kennedy Middle School in May.

HMS principal Craig Pallister told a crowd gathered for Tuesday morning’s ribbon cutting outside the school’s new addition that “this is the start of the tradition for Hays Middle School.”

“We have new students, new teachers, new secretaries and a new assistant principal.  We even have a new football team which is undefeated in the history of Hays Middle School,” Pallister joked, drawing a laugh from the audience.

Pallister doesn’t know if the football team will remain undefeated but says he does know Hays Middle School is “full of opportunities.”

There are 600 students in 6th, 7th and 8th grades, along with 75 staff members at HMS.

The original building dates to 1964 when it was known as Hays Junior High School.  After some reconstruction in 1981, it became Felten Middle School.  Now, as of August 16, 2012, it’s Hays Middle School.

Pallister says an east side addition is planned which will include a storm shelter, the first for any school in USD 489.

New Kansas Room Librarian at Hays Public Library

Even though she interned at the prestigious Harry S. Truman Presidential Library in Independence, Missouri, Lucia Flaim is still a little overwhelmed by the Hays Public Library’s Kansas Room.

Flaim, who goes by Lucy, was recently hired to replace Mary Ann Thompson, who retired in June after nearly 30 years as the HPL Kansas Room Librarian.

“Every day I find something new among the closed stacks, and I just know it’s going to be of interest and important to somebody who walks through the door,” she says.

Flaim has a Master of Library Science degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia and a native of  St. James, Missouri.

She plans to expand the Kansas Room holdings about Walker Air Force Base, which operated north of Hays during World War II, and also wants to gather more history about the city of Victoria.

You can see more from Lucy Flaim on an upcoming “Community Connection with Mike Cooper” on Eagle Community TV Channel 14.

Chicken Heist Leaves Authorities Stumped

A major theft at a Kansas farm has authorities wondering just how to track down some stolen livestock. After all, says Franklin County Sheriff Jeffry Curry, chickens aren’t tagged or branded.

One-hundred chickens were taken over the weekend from a farm in a rural part of the county. The thief or thieves also took a $1,000 mower and a four-wheel ATV.

Curry estimates the chickens’ value at $600.

The farm is owned by Bo Tran, who lives about 40 miles away in the Kansas City suburb of Leawood and works the property on weekends.

Since the chickens aren’t marked, the sheriff says he’s not sure how they’ll be identified. But he says detectives will do what they can to figure out who stole them.

Routine Traffic Stop Leads To Drug Bust, Search Across Multiple Area Counties

A routine traffic stop in Russell County led to multiple arrests for suspected drug trafficking and a wide scale search for additional suspects.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, around 8:30 am Wednesday, authorities pulled over a vehicle in Russell County which lead to the discovery of drugs. Upon questioning the suspects, authorities learned of the possible involvement of another group traveling in a different vehicle.

After a search that expanded into multiple counties, authorities located the other suspects in Ellsworth County.

The suspects were taken into custody and transported back to Russell County for questioning.

Their identities, and the amount or type of drugs involved have yet to be released.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information is announced.
