McPherson College President Issues Statement Concerning Second Arrest In Murder Case

McPherson College President Michael Schneider issued a statement Wednesday evening regarding the second arrest connected to the investigation of Brandon Brown’s death.

“McPherson College confirms that a second student, Dequinte Oshea Flournoy, has been arrested in conjunction with the death of Tabor College student Brandon Brown.

While we will not pre-judge this case or anyone involved, McPherson College maintains a responsibility to ensure the safety of the entire student body. Any action that is disruptive to our learning environment or adversely affects the welfare of our students cannot be allowed. Per policy, the Campus Conduct Committee convened last week anddetermined that any arrest or charge made in conjunction with this incident would result in the immediate suspensionof the student in question. In accordance with that decision, Mr. Flournoy has been suspended from McPherson College, pending the outcome of his case.

We continue to work closely with law enforcement authorities on their investigation and encourage anyone with information about the incident to contact the McPherson Police Department.

We continue to pray for the family of Brandon Brown, as well as for the students arrested. One brief moment of anger on September 16 has changed the lives of everyone in the McPherson and Hillsboro communities. Despite our shock and grief, we are determined to heal together and to emerge stronger.”

Early Childhood Programs Facing Major Budget Cuts

A group that supports early-childhood programs in Kansas is preparing for massive budget cuts next year.

The Kansas Children’s Cabinet and Trust Fund has been told that up to 75 percent of its $56 million budget could be cut because of a drop in money from a lawsuit against tobacco companies.

Topeka Capital-Journal reported Wednesday that the head of the cabinet, Amanda Adkins, told board members to prepare two different program recommendations. One would assume the group would continue to receive $56 million in tobacco funds. The other would assume the group gets only $12 million.

Kansas and 30 other states are currently in arbitration over provisions in the tobacco case settlement, leading to speculation that funding for the cabinet will be cut.

Winning Strategies, Part 1

By Phil Coleman and Tom Wilbur

In business, in writing, and in motivational speaking, we’ve found that success often comes from looking within to find one’s strengths, building upon them, and then getting out and sharing them with the world. We all hear people speak to the idea that they’d like to write a book someday, and it’s always fun to talk about, but it’s so rarely acted upon. Like most things in life, talking the talk is the easy part. Making a commitment to take action is quite another.

Maybe it’s time you thought about it more seriously. We all have something to share with others. You may have an idea could change the world, one person at a time. It takes preparation, time, and hard work, to reduce ideas to a blank page, and bring it all together—but you can do it. Find a blank piece of paper, make an outline, and get started.

For those of you not interested in becoming an author today, what changes might you make to be more successful in life, and in business? In considering ideas for positive change, here are “The 12 Books That Winners Might Write.” Look them over:

1.      Be A Great Example To Others Through Your Daily Behavior

2.      Help Others In Need Over The Course Of Your Lifetime

3.      Keep Learning— Do Extra Credit Work Without Having It Assigned To You

4.      Make Every Day Count, Because This Day Will Never Come Again

5.      When Things Go Wrong, Don’t Go Wrong With Them

6.      It’s The Little Things In Life That Determine The Big Things

7.      You Are Rich According To What You Are, Not According To What You Have

8.      Build A Strong Positive Foundation, And Live Each Day By Those Principles

9.      The Best Way To Cheer Yourself Up Is To Cheer Somebody Else Up

10.  When Looking For Faults, Use A Mirror—Not A Telescope

11.  Have a Little Faith, It Can Change Your Life

12.  Winners Persevere, When Others Give Up

If you spend time thinking with these titles, you will find powerful statements here. There are concepts here for internalizing and improving your value sets, and further, extending your impact and outreach to others. Some of these may already be engrained in who you are. Others may be ideas you’d like to improve upon.

Here’s a challenge. Pick three of these titles. Instead of writing a book on them, set a course for how you might take personal ownership in them, and live them each day. Don’t hide them away, but take action upon the titles you choose. Write them down, and put them somewhere where you can see them each day.

Few things you have done in the past can determine your path for the tomorrow. With each morning’s dawn, comes the opportunity to change your behavior. And you’ll soon find that by controlling what you can control, and making positive changes in you— meaningful new relationships will develop, and grow.

Put the past behind you, and focus upon making the kind of changes that will lead to a long term win—for you, your family, and your world.

“Have Faith—Look Up—It Works”

Until next time,

Phil and Tom

Husband’s Ashes Stolen From Wichita Widow’s Home

The daughter of an 88-year-old Wichita woman whose home was burglarized is hoping to recover just one stolen item: a box containing the ashes of the woman’s late husband.

The break-in occurred Sunday morning while the widow was at church. Her daughter, J.E. Kelly, told the newspaper Wednesday the stolen items included money, jewelry and gold-colored etched metal box containing the ashes.

Kelly says her mother planned to be buried someday with her husband’s ashes. They’re worried now that whoever has the box will open it, realize what’s inside and throw it away.

The thief or thieves can keep everything else, Kelly says, “but if anyone has my father, I’d really like him back.”

Six Southwest Kansas Men Killed In Oklahoma Panhandle Accident

An SUV veered across a highway median in the Oklahoma Panhandle early Wednesday and slammed head-on into an oncoming van full of men headed to work at a Texas meatpacking plant, killing both drivers and five of the six van passengers, authorities say.

The Chevy Suburban was moving fast and passed a couple of trucks on Highway 412 just before it crossed the center line and collided with the van near Elmwood, Oklahoma, according to  Highway Patrol Trooper Betsy Randolph.

All seven of the men in the van were from Liberal and Dodge City.   They were headed to work at Booker Packing Company in Booker, Texas.

Randolph says the SUV driver was from Woodward, Oklahoma.  The surviving van passenger was airlifted a hospital in Amarillo, Texas.

Second Arrest Made In Connection With Death Of Tabor Football Player

By Fred Gough ~ Hutch Post

A second person has been arrested in connection with the death of a Tabor Football Player.

According to McPherson Police Chief, Rob McClarty, they have now arrested 19-year-old Dequinte Oshea Flourney of Dallas, Texas. As with Alton Franklin, he is charged with aiding and abetting murder in the second degree. He is also being held in the McPherson County Jail on a half million dollar bond.

He will face the same sentencing range of 109-to-143 months, and a fine up to 300-thousand dollars on the charge. Franklin is facing a preliminary hearing date of October 3 for the charge against him.

The charges against the two men come after the 26-year-old Brandon Brown, a Tabor football player died after a disturbance in the early morning of September 16, in McPherson.

Brown was found in the 400 block of North Carrie and sustained critical injuries as a result of the altercation. He was taken to Via-Cristi St. Francis Regional Medical Center where he died at 10:16 p.m, on Saturday September 22.

McPherson Police Chief Rob McClarty says the investigation into the case is ongoing and being conducted by his department, the McPherson County Sheriff’s Office and the KBI.
