The Tigers scored two goals in the final 11 minutes of regulation to tie West Texas A&M, 2-2, on Sunday in a non-conference match at the FHSU Soccer Stadium in Hays. Diego Cabral scored both goals for the Tigers, his fifth and sixth of the season. FHSU moves to 8-3-1 on the season and West Texas goes to 8-1-2.
The Buffs put in the first two goals, both scored by Dominic Furness early in the second half. Less than a minute into the second half, Furness put in a shot right in front, beating Kent Freund to his right side. Furness scored his second goal in the 62nd minute on another shot right in front for a 2-0 Buffs advantage.
Cabral scored his first of two goals in the 80th minute on a penalty kick, cutting the margin to one at 2-1. The PK was set up after a Buffs foul on Austin Clifton in the box. On the second goal, Cabral’s header found the back of the net after a free kick from Tanner Brock from about 45 yards out.
After two 10 minute scoreless overtime periods, the match ended with a 2-2 score.
Freund went the full 110 minutes in goal for FHSU, making 14 saves, which is the most in FHSU men’s soccer history, and allowing the two goals.
The Tigers return to MIAA play on Thursday for a 3 p.m. match against Truman. FHSU plays four-straight road matches and then return home for its regular season finale on Oct. 26 against Southern Nazarene.
