City Approves Amended Pavilion Request

The city’s contribution to building a pavilion in downtown Hays was approved Thursday night, but with some adjustments. Some of the commissioners are not comfortable using taxpayer dollars for a building the city did not design or bid.

The motion approved by the commission says the city will provide site preparation in the amount of approximately $176,000 and build restrooms if the railroad approves the use of the land and DHDC and the city have a maintenance agreement.

DHDC has an anonymous donor willing to put up half of the money if the city makes both cash and in kind contributions.

Commissioner Ron Mellick voted no, saying it’s too expensive and he doesn’t think it’s the type of facility the city should be involved in building and managing.
