Four Tigers Named to All-MIAA Volleyball Team

Fort Hays State had four players named to the All-MIAA Volleyball Team for 2012, released on Friday, November 16. Leading the list is second-team selection Jenna Ulrich at middle hitter. Earning honorable mention honors this year are setter Kayla Zoglman, libero Makenzie Weinman and rightside hitter Taylor Mares.

Ulrich, a junior from Luray, Kan., continued her emergence as one of the top middle hitters in the conference. She finished the season leading the team in hitting percentage at .311, which ranked eighth in the MIAA. Her 1.28 blocks per set led the MIAA at the end of the regular season. Ulrich finished the year with 154 blocks, which tied Sarah Schinstock’s single season record for the rally-scoring era set in 2007. Ulrich’s 1.28 blocks per set ranks second in a single season during the rally scoring era, just one one-hundredth behind Schinstock, who played one less set in 2007 and had a rate of 1.29. Ulrich now has 295 blocks in her career, which is second on the career list at FHSU in the rally scoring era. She is just five blocks away from overtaking the record of 299 held by Amber Zoglman. The 295 blocks ranks fourth on the NCAA era career list at FHSU. If she keeps this pace during her senior year, she’ll have a shot at overtaking the record of 431 held by Jennifer Brandes. Ulrich finished the year with 313 kills, the second straight year she’s went over 300 in a season after 303 last year. She now has 639 kills in her career. Ulrich earns her second-straight All-MIAA honor after getting an honorable mention selection last year.

Zoglman, a senior from Goddard, Kan., finished her two-year career at FHSU with a total of 2,410 assists. Zoglman finished this year with 1,148 assists, averaging 9.9 per set. She ranked fourth in the MIAA in assists per set. She finished her career second on the NCAA era and rally scoring era lists in assists at FHSU, passing Whitney Hoffman (2,359) on both lists. She finished with an exact rate of 10 assists per set in her two years at FHSU, which ranks fourth on the assist per set list in the NCAA era and third in the rally-scoring era. She also had a solid all-around year in several other categories, with 49 kills, a team-leading 28 service aces, 322 digs (tied for second on the team), and 68 blocks (third on the team).

Weinman, a junior from Phillipsburg, Kan., earns her first all-conference nod at the libero position. Weinman finished the year with 576 digs, a rate of 4.5 per set. She ranked seventh in the MIAA in digs per set. The 576 digs ranks fifth-highest for a single season in the rally scoring era at FHSU and it ranks ninth in the NCAA Division II era. It’s is also ninth on the single-season digs per set list in the NCAA era. Weinman now has 988 digs in her career at FHSU.

Mares, a sophomore from Fort Collins, Colo., had a breakout season for the Tigers at rightside hitter. After seeing limited action as a freshman last year, she finished the year with 260 kills, averaging 2.32 per set, and had a hitting percentage of .232. She also had 63 blocks for the year, which ranked fourth on the team.
