FHSU Men’s Soccer Can’t Overcome Early Deficit, Fall in NCAA Regional

A four goal deficit was too much for the Fort Hays State men’s soccer team to overcome in a 6-3 loss to Northeastern State in the Third Round of the NCAA Tournament, hosted by NSU in Tahlequah, Okla. on Friday. The loss ends the Tigers’ season with an 11-6-2 record.

The host Riverhawks scored four goals in a span of 22 minutes to pull out to a 4-0 lead in the 49th minute of the match. Four Riverhawks scored in the stretch with goals coming in the 27th minute, 35th minute, 42nd minute and 49th minute.

Daneil Peralta personally cut the lead in half with back-to-back Tiger goals, his team-leading 11th and 12th of the season. The two goals came within 1:14 of each other at the 61:36 and 62:50 marks. Michael Cole picked up the assist on the second as Peralta knocked in Cole’s rebounded shot.

NSU responded with a goal in the 73rd minute by Henry Wildenborg to open the margin back up to three at 5-2.

Cole and Peralta switched roles in the final Tiger goal as Cole scored the goal and Peralta got the assist for a 5-3 score in 80th minute.

The Riverhawks put in the final goal of the match in the 87th minute on a tally from Juan Peralta for the final 6-3 score.

The Tigers were outshot 27-13 by host NSU, including a 13-4 advantage in the first stanza. The Riverhawks held a 14-8 advantage in shots on goal.

Kent Freund made eight saves in goal for FHSU and allowed six goals. He dropped to 6-4-2 on the season.

The Tigers end the 2012 season, their second in school history, with a 11-6-2 record, and a 7-2-1 record in the MIAA.
