While no humans were injured in a high-speed, head-on collision Thursday in Stafford County, one dog was killed, another was thought to be dead and a puppy was injured.
A North Dakota man, who had two adult redbone coonhounds and a puppy with him, was driving through Stafford County Thursday when he and another driver collided head-on at speeds of nearly 70 mph, when one attempted to avoid a third vehicle (the driver of the third vehicle fled the scene but has since been located).
The adult female coonhound was killed in the accident, the adult male was believed to be dead (but was recently located running through a field) and the puppy suffered a broken front leg and a broken back leg.
Emergency personnel took the puppy to a local veterinary clinic where she is currently being cared for.
According to Dr. SandiĀ G. Hayek, of Countryside Veterinary Associates, the puppy will need to have a pin put in one of her broken legs, but since she is only around 12-weeks old, she would likely make a full recovery in 4-8 weeks. However, the owner has decided that he did not want to pay for the medical fees and would not be able to care for the injured puppy.
A Stafford County EMT who worked the accident has agreed to adopt the puppy, and is now working to raise an approximate $1,000 needed to pay for the dog’s surgery and care.
